In the framework of the Safe-by-Design for Nano (SbD4Nano) project, Creative Nano has modified the surface of sulfur-doped TiO₂ nanoparticles with different amounts of SiO₂ to form S-doped TiO₂/SiO₂ hybrids. Following a Safe by Design (SbD) strategy, a SiO₂ layer was introduced to reduce the potential toxicity of the TiO₂ NPs without affecting their photocatalytic activity.
Measurements carried out by SbD4Nano partners, Sabancı University Nanotechnology Research & Application Center (cytotoxicity) and ITENE (ecotoxicity) revealed that the modified TiO₂ nanoparticles are no longer toxic for an optimized level of modification.
These have now been incorporated in a a waterborne paint formulation, a nano-enabled product capable of removing indoor air pollutants such as nitrogen oxide species (NOx) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) via visible light photodegradation.
